Week of March 3rd What is Prajna Yoga? How does it compare to other styles of yoga?
In the ancient language of the yogis, Sanskrit,Prajna means Insight, Deep Understanding and Wisdom. Prajna yoga is a style of yoga developed by Master Yoga teacher Tias Little. It is a dynamic practice designed to strengthen the mind and spirit as well as the body. Through regular practice the student develops strength, flexibility and the ability to relax and focus the attention.
Tias has studied and practiced yoga for almost 25 years and has studied with Pattobhi Jois the originator of the Ashtanga technique as well as with B.K.S.Inyegar, known around the world for his yoga teachings and style of practice.
Unlike Bikram or some styles of Power Yoga, there is no superheating of the practice studio for Prajna yoga classes. Students practice in comfortable ambient temperatues. There is also no fixed sequence of poses and the teacher and home practioner is free to select from the hundreds of known yoga poses as appropriate for his or her level of strength and flexibility.
In Prajna yoga the breathe is full but relaxed and natural and requires no forcing or holding of the abdominal or other muscles groups. Similar to other styles of yoga, the breath supports the practice and enables movement outside of the range that would otherwise be possible.
